These clients wanted their poorly converted garage to be turned into a welcoming guest accommodation/holiday home on two levels.
At ground level, a tiny shower room and minuscule kitchen had their walls removed and were opened up to provide a bigger, open plan living area. The new kitchen now occupies the area along the outer wall to the garden and is fully equipped (with oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washer dryer) to connect with an open plan living room, making this home totally self sufficient.
A new window was custom built matching the existing window of the previous kitchen, and offering great views to the back garden. A stable door provides direct access to the garden.
A new shower room was created at the back of the garage, for which a previous garden door was turned into a window, and glass bricks were inserted into the back wall to provide light to the shower area. Underfloor heating was installed in addition to a heated towel rail. TV aerial cables were put into the newly erected dividing wall so that a TV could be wall mounted between the bathroom and storage cupboard doors.
A large cupboard previously housing the boiler was turned into a large storage cupboard and the boiler was relocated outside, into a newly built mini lean-to extension.
A huge solid wood staircase right in the centre of the garage, practically filled the entire ground floor space, making it impossible to furnish the space properly. The mezzanine floor was also way too small to even accommodate a bed. So the mezzanine floor was extended to cover the entire garage area, but for an area to one side, which was left open to create the illusion of height and provide extra light to the ground floor level. A modern bannister was created to make this opening safe on the bedroom level. A new spiral staircase in the far corner of the ground floor now connects to the new mezzanine bedroom level, which includes ample storage in custom drawer units to either side of the bed and under the eves.
An old barn door, opening into the main house, adds bit of country character.
